The first modern international Olympic Games

Dear Phil,
Re: La Marina Bowls Club with Phil Morris

The comment: "it was on this day in 1894 that the International Olympic Committee was founded by Pierre de Coubertin, and the rest as they say is history" implies that Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the modern Olympic Games and that modern Olympic history began when the IOC was founded. That's not the case.

The first modern international Olympic Games took place in Athens in a city square in 1859. The first modern international Olympic Games to take place in a stadium was held in Athens in the Panathenian stadium in 1870. Followed by another in 1875.

That same stadium was used five times for the Olympic Games and for events of the Olympic Games in: 1870, 1875, 1896, 1906, and 2004. See www.zappas.org

Yours faithfully,
